ZONTE'S FOOTSTEP "Chocolate Factory" 2021 - Shiraz - Mclaren Vale - Australia
About this wine
Deep purple colour with garnet-purple hue. On the nose, warm blackberry pie with notes of fresh blueberries and blackberry preserve. Star anise, nutmeg and cocoa sneak up under the berry fruit. On the palate, velvety, plush and fragrant rich blackberry/cherry fruits tempered with the soft "milk chocolate" McLaren Vale Shiraz sweetness and roundness. The aftertaste presents lashings of trademark milk chocolate with blackberries and dark-fleshed plums and spice with velvety, smooth tannins. It's like taking a big mouthful of Black Forest cake.

Fermentation & Maceration The fruit for the chocolate factory is sourced from hand tended blocks in the mclaren vale. primary fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel vats and 5 tonne open fermenters after which the wine is assembled into tank and allowed to complete a natural malo-lactic fermentation before being pressed off. it is then transferred to well-seasoned hogsheads and aged for up to 12 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration. this results in a wine with purity of fruit that is unpretentious and eminently satisfying to allow for regular indulgence. refer to the attached flow chart.

Though it will drink great now, especially with anything off the grill, it should cellar well over the medium term... If you can resist your chocolate craving.

    Critique Review
"Now, if you are going to dub a wine the ‘Chocolate Factory’, either it was made by Willy Wonka, which we can safely rule out here, or it is all glorious chocolate. Such a name imposes certain expectations. For me, a cracking wine, but I can’t honestly say I found oodles of chocolate. Just the requisite amount. Still, we should not demean the wine for that. Inky dark maroon, black fruits with cassis, mulberries, dry herbs, cloves, black olives, bergamot, coffee grinds, blackberries, even a lovely yet gentle intrusion of blueberries. But chocolate? Just a little. Excellent length here with very fine, plush tannins and impeccable balance. Lots to love and a wine which will age for a decade – and who knows, perhaps more chocolate will emerge over time. Great value."

“Gorgeously fruited and perfumed, showing blackberry, floral, roasted nut and subtle cocoa notes, leading to a silky-smooth palate that's plump and flavoursome. Soothing and generous with seductive complexity and a lengthy satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2033.”

Though made entirely the same way as all wines, vegan wines are wines in which during the winemaking step of "fining" that is needed to filter the wine, no animal-based products are used. The most common fining agents used by the wine industry are egg whites and milk protein. Vegan wines instead use alternatives such as clay or plant-based fining agents.

      Good

Had this wine the other day while dining at the PLQ outlet with some friends. We thought the label was cool and its actually easy to drink! Really smooth and nice on its own. We chilled it in an ice bucket and had it with our choco lava cake dessert

      Good

Deep purple hues and good bouquet with plum, black currant, red cherry. Milky chocolate, spices and soft tannins finish. Good pairing with grilled meats
