Introduction to Western Australia
Western Australia is home to some of the most outstanding wines in Australia. Located over 1,000 miles from Adelaide and closer to Jakarta than Sydney, the terroir and wine culture is unique to the remote south-west corner of Australia. Its dramatic coastline, signature clones and ambitious, premium-focused producers conspire to produce beautifully balanced wines with intense fruit and elegant acidity.
Western Australian Wine Region - Margaret River
The Margaret River Wine Region is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia, around 270 kilometres (168 miles) from the state’s capital, Perth. Margaret River is one of the Earth’s most pristine, geographically secluded, coastal wine regions. This breathtaking destination of ancient landforms, lush forests and distinct Ironstone gravel soils enjoys a ‘textbook perfect’ climate for fine wines, with its consistent Mediterranean climate and intense maritime influence – here, the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Scarce and sought-after worldwide, Margaret River wines represent only 2% of the Australian annual crush.
Western Australian Wine Region - Great Southern
The Great Southern Wine Region is situated on the south coast of Western Australia. It is Australia’s largest wine region, spanning 150 km (93 miles) north to south and 100 km (62 miles) east to west. It is made up of five official subregions - Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup. Great Southern is as vast and isolated as it is diverse – a patchwork of coastal maritime land, gently undulating hills, open grazing country, eucalypt forests and ancient granite outcrops. Taken as a whole, Great Southern is the coolest wine region in Western Australia. The climate is largely Mediterranean, with cool to mild winters and warm summers, but varies greatly across subregions
Meet our Western Australian Producers - Singlefile
Winemaker: Patrick Corbett
Singlefile Wines was co-founded in 2007 by geologists Phil and Viv Snowden, along with their daughter Pam and son-in-law Patrick Corbett. They all had successful careers prior to the establishment of Singlefile, but their pathways became inextricably woven together thanks to their shared love of wine. Patrick and Pam lived in Italy as a young couple, which crystallised their appreciation for exceptional wines. Reuniting with Phil and Viv over summer holidays gave the family an opportunity to discover Old World wine regions together, planting the seed for creating their own winery.
Meet our Western Australian Producers - Duke's Vineyard
Winemaker: Ben Cane
Located at the western foot of the stunning ancient Porongurup range in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, Duke’s Vineyard is a ten-hectare vineyard planted in 1999 to Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Ben Cane and his partner Sarah Date purchased Duke's Vineyard when founders Duke and Hilde Ranson decided to retire in 2022. Ben, previously the chief winemaker at top labels in Australia and California, was honored to be entrusted by Duke to continue running this family-owned operation renowned for putting Great Southern Rieslings on the map.
Meet our Western Australian Producers - Cherubino Wines
Winemaker: Larry Cherubino
The roots for Cherubino were laid in 2004 when Edwina and Larry Cherubino bought land in the Frankland River sub region of the Great Southern, Australia’s largest wine region by sheer geography. A small parcel, originally part of a large, historic holding called Riversdale, their dream then was simply to plant their own vineyard. An opportunity to buy the neighbouring property, with acres of prime river and vineyard country, enlarged their vision. Frankland River in some sense is the soul of Cherubino, where it all began.
