CHATEAU DE SANTENAY - Pinot Noir - Beaune Premier Cru "Montee Rouge", Burgundy, FRANCE

From one of the lesser-known Beaune Premier Crus, this wine is named after the vineyard's red soil. The clay and limestone soils and the ideal aspect of these vineyards consistently produce an excellent wine year after year.

The estate of Château de Santenay is spread over an area of 90 ha ( 222 acres) stretching from the southern vineyards of Mercurey in Côte Chalonnaise up to the Grand Cru of Clos des Vougeot in Cote de Nuits. We own no less than 25 different appellations.
A third of our estate is located in the Côte d’Or with vineyards in Aloxe-Corton, Beaune 1er Cru, St Aubin, Pommard, and …. Santenay of course and the rest is located in the up and coming appellation of Mercurey.
The estate was converted to sustainable farming in 2004, Terra-vitis certified. We apply practices which respect the environment. We don’t use herbicides pesticides, or artificial chemicals. Our goal is to maintain life in the soil and maximum empressize each plot’s terroir in the wines produced there.
Each Parcel is vinified separately to transmit the full expression of the terroir.
A modern and advanced winery welcome our grapes, with gentle extraction for respecting the terroir of each parcel.
The castle was once the residence of the Duke of Burgundy Philippe Le Hardi (Philippe the Bold) ( 1342-1404) who was the first and foremost ambassador of Burgundy and its great wines.
Conscious that wine was not just a mere beverage, in 1395, he issued an edict banishing the disloyal Gamay grape in favor of the noble Pinot noir. To this day, Pinot noir is still the grape used for all burgundy’s flagship red wines.

The vineyard of Beaune faces east and overlooks the city just below. The vineyard is almost entirely located on a slope. The clay and limestone soils and the ideal aspect of these vineyards consistently produce an excellent wine year after year.

Label Notes:

The Castle belonged to Duke Philippe-Le-Hardi (1342-1404), son of the King of France Jean-Le-Bon. The wine estate consists of 90 hectares of vineyards where the noble Burgundian grape varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown. The wines are aged in the purest of Burgundian tradition in the castle cellars.

Handmade and mechanical

Fermentation and Maceration:

Cold soaked for 7 days. Temperature Controlled fermentation - duration 12/14 days. Punch down and pump over allow a gentle extraction and thrust. We are looking for the complete extraction of the color and the strong presence of the most elegant tannins. Aged in oak cask.
