STORIES BEHIND THE BOTTLES - Episode 1 - Federico Paternina

Bodegas Paternina can trace their history back to 1896 when they were founded by Federico Paternina Josué. The winery, based in Ollauri, started with 1000 American oak barrels. In 1922 they expanded by purchasing the wineries of the Catholic Farmer's Union, based in Haro. The company went from strength to strength and in 1984 was acquired by wine lover and businessman Marcos Euizabal Ramirez. In 1990 he carried out an ambitious investment plan and modernised the winery. To this day it hosts the most up-to-date wine technology. The cellars in Ollauri are still used and are the deepest in the area.

The main winery is based in Haro whilst the cellars are in the nearby village of Ollauri. Most of the vineyards are within Rioja Alta but they also own vineyards in Rioja Baja and Alavesa. This gives the winemaker a broad range of fruit to play with in order to create the multitude of wines in their portfolio.

Bodegas Paternina is both historic and modern. This allows them to craft classic style Rioja in the best possible way. They can craft wines capable of ageing for a long period of time but these wines will still taste fresh and alive even after many years in the bottle.

FEDERICO PATERNINA - RIOJA GRAN RESERVA

RIOJA GRAN RESERVA, 2011: Fine and elegant bouquet with velvety textures. The Gran Reserva is aged 24 months in oak barrels, and 3 years in bottle before being released, giving this Rioja wine the most tannin structure and age-worthy potential.

FEDERICO PATERNINA "BANDA AZUL"- RIOJA CRIANZA

RIOJA CRIANZA, 2015: Refreshing, elegant and attractive style - A proper classic Rioja, aged 1 year in oak barrels. It’s not too rich with natural high tannin and body.

- Silver Medal Mundus Vini 2018
- Gold Medal Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2017

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most iconic Paternina is the ‘Banda Azul’, wine chosen by influential personalities such as Hemingway or Alfonso Suárez. The Banda Azul is the key wine in their stable and was in fact the favourite wine of writer Ernest Hemingway. The cellar where this wine matures is named in his honour. Synonym of quality and presence.
